Newington YC 2
Drumaness Mills 1
NEWINGTON YC scraped past Drumaness Mills in a dour encounter at
Seaview.
The title chasers seized an eighth minute lead
when their striker headed home from a corner. A much changed
Drumaness side were coming under sustained pressure and Newington
almost made it 2-0 when their number 9 headed wide from a good
position.
The Mills settled after a nervous opening and
with 15 minutes gone Stevie Deegan shot narrowly over the top from
20 yards out after good approach play from Paul Walsh.
With 30 minutes gone goalkeeper Michael Watson
had to be alert to keep out a long range strike, but the Mills fell
further into arrears in the 43rd minute.
Watson raced out of his area to clear the
ball, but in a calamity of errors he missed with an attempted
clearance and Paddy Burns could only watch in horror as the ball
deflected off him and ended up in the net.
The Mills pulled one back two minutes after
the break when Stuart Carville whacked the ball home following a
John Connolly corner, but this was as good as it got for the Mills
as Newington closed up shop.
