Drumaness Mills 1
Dunmurry Rec 0
DRUMANESS Mills took a giant step towards retaining their
Premier Section status with this hard-earned win.
The Mills are now fifth from bottom and with two games left should
be safe from relegation.
Barn United and Holywood both lost on Saturday and it seems likely
that one of these two sides will join Nortel in Division 1A next
season.
The only goal of the game came in the 10th minute through Stevie
Deegan, and although it wasn't a classic, nobody at Meadowvale
minded one bit in the slightest.
Drumaness started brightly and with three minutes gone Gavin
McEvoy's free kick into the six yard box begged to be put away, but
the Neil Walsh was unable to get the ball from under his feet to get
a shot in and the chance was gone.
The Mills continued to push forward and with 10 minutes gone they
broke the deadlock when Deegan won an aerial battle with Colin Kerr
and flicked the ball into the path of Neil Walsh.
The pacy striker beat the Dunmurry goalkeeper Mark Wilton in a race
for the ball and calmly lifted it over him. The ball was heading
into the net, but Deegan arrived on the scene and whacked the ball
over the line from a yard out and he is definitely claiming the
goal.
With 18 minutes gone Neil Walsh forced Wilton into a rash clearance.
The ball fell kindly at Deegan's feet, but he sliced his shot well
wide from a good position.
Two minutes later Neil Walsh sped past his marker and stormed into
the box, but he delayed pulling the trigger and again the chance was
lost.
This was Walsh's last piece of action as he was forced out of the
game with a hamstring injury in the 28th minute.
Dunmurry's first real chance in the first half came two minutes
later, but Brendan Ward prevented Paul Redpath from equalising with
a well timed tackle inside the box.
Redpath then produced a stunning pass to release Ricky Rutherford in
behind the Mills defence, but he shot wide with only Michael Watson
to beat.
Rutherford and Paul Burns were both then booked after a bit of a
flare up, but sense prevailed and the red mist quickly lifted.
Seven minutes into the second half Gary Murdock, who had an
excellent game in the middle of the park, played a superb pass into
the path of Mark Feenan, but he shot wildly over the top.
Two minutes later Feenan left his marker for dead with a super turn,
but it all came to nothing when he shot wide.
Sixteen minutes later down at the end the post came to Drumaness'
rescue when Rutherford got on the end of a cross from Kenny Camlin,
but his header rebounded off the wood work.
Drumaness retreated into their shell after this, but a back four of
John Connolly, Brendan Ward, Aidy Kelly and Paul Burns gave
absolutely nothing away.
The Mills finished the game on the attack and Paul Walsh was denied
on two occasions by Wilton as Drumaness secured three invaluable
points.
